Most Important Karst Aquifer Spring Gunung Sewu

Karst Research Group, Faculty of Geography, UGM cooperates with the Environmental Agency of Gunungkidul Regency in The Most Important Karst Aquifer Spring (MIKAS) Gunung Sewu project. This project consists of public workshop, public hearing, and publication of The MIKAS Gunung Sewu Project booklet. The MIKAS Gunung Sewu Project is a part of Asian Trans-Disciplinary Karst Conference 2024. It aims to disseminate the Global MIKAS Project to the local and regional stakeholder in Karst of Gunung Sewu.

What is MIKAS?

The Most Important Karst Aquifer Spring is a water resource conservation initiative in karst region by the International Association of Hydrogeologist (IAH). This project was initiated in the EUROKARST Conference 2022, Malaga. MIKAS aims to nominate aquifer and springs that hold important roles for the livelihood of the people.

MIKAS aims to:

  1. Create a global list of the most important karst aquifer and springs
  2. Develop a guideline for the protection of karst spring aquifer
  3. Promote karst spring and aquifer.

Results and outcomes

The MIKAS Gunung Sewu Project promotes Bribin-Baron hydrogeology system and its springs and aquifer as one of the most important hydrological features in Karst of Gunung Sewu. Bribin-Baron hydrogeology system charges tens of springs in Karst of Gunung Sewu. These springs have sustained the livelihood of the people for decades. They also serve as a key ecosystem and have invaluable scientific significance.

A series of workshops have been done to spread awareness and nominate Baron-Bribin hydrogeology system as the most important aquifers. The Environmental Agency of Gunungkidul Regency facilitates the workshop and nomination. Karst Research Groups produces the educational media and the content of the workshop. Two workshops were done to collect the information and disseminate the Baron-Bribin status from and to the related stakeholders. These workshops invited several key stakeholders who came from local community, private sector, academic, and NGOs.
